VULNERABLE PEOPLE HIT MOST BY TIME DELAY

SNP MP for Moray, Angus Robertson, has said Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs need to pay out tax credits and child benefit claims faster.

HMRC’s 2011-12 half-yearly performance report shows child benefit claims are being cleared in an average of 29.1 days against a 23-day target.

The local MP regularly hears concerns from constituents who are fighting bureaucracy and delay in the tax and benefits systems.

It also states Tax Credit claims are being paid out in an average of 25.9 days to a 23-day target.

Angus Robertson MP said:

“ These benefits are of significant importance to working families and these delays mean families are going nearly a month without seeing basic payments like Child Benefit. That is just unacceptable.

“ This undoubtedly affects the least well off such as the low paid and parents who choose to be at home with children. HMRC must find a way to speed up this process to enable it to meet its targets.

“ For Child Benefit the target is not just being missed by a day or two but almost an entire week. For families struggling with soaring household bills and frozen incomes it is an unnecessary additional pressure.

“ I have written to HMRC urging them to review the process in which it clears Child Benefit and Tax Credits to enable it to process claims quicker and ease the burden on families in Moray and across Scotland.”
