MORAY’S ‘COST OF COMMUTE’ AMONGST HIGHEST PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 November 2011 00:00

REGION HAS 12th HIGHEST FUEL COSTS OUT OF 381 LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Moray commuters, if they didn’t know it already, face some of the highest commuting costs in the UK with the region appearing 12th out of 381 Local Authorities across the UK.

The ‘Cost of Commute’ figures have been researched by the Countryside Alliance and are based on current fuel costs and distance to work figures provided in the recent census.

Moray’s MP Angus Robertson, along with SNP colleagues, has long campaigned for fairer fuel taxation by the UK Government with a whopping 80p per litre in tax currently being paid by consumers.

For Moray residents it is a triple whammy with the region having one of the lowest average wages in Scotland and a high reliance on cars.

Commenting Angus Robertson MP said:

“ These figures from the Countryside Alliance confirm what most folk in Moray probably already suspected, that we have some of the highest fuel costs for commuting in the UK.

“ Of 381 local authorities Moray has the 12th highest fuel cost for commuting per month - a whopping £80, up nearly £6 pounds since only January of this year!

“ With the bulk of the cost being eaten up by the Treasury action from the Chancellor is long overdue.

“ Scotland is an oil producing nation and for our own people here in Moray being hit on three fronts with high fuel prices, high car reliance and low wages the Tories and Lib-Dems need to get their heads out of the sand on this issue.

“ Fuel prices continue to dominate the issues that are raised with me by constituents. Not only is it an essential item in a rural region but the more money that is eaten up on our forecourts the less money there is spent in local businesses.

“ The Chancellor has an opportunity next week to take positive action on fuel prices and the SNP will continue to put pressure on him to do so.”
