Moray MP Angus Robertson has joined calls for the UK Government to back the creation of a dotSCOT (.scot) internet domain, and ensure Scotland is at the centre of a transformation in the way people use the web. The campaign for a dotSCOT domain name has gathered pace and the Scottish Government through Alex Neil, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, has written to the UK’s Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, asking him to back the not-for-profit company Dot Scot Registry (DSR) which has been set up specifically to ensure a domain is established. With Scottish identity being so important to industry and culture there is significant interest and support for the proposal. The campaign comes ahead of the application window starting on January 12th 2012 which the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced for new Top Level Domains (TLDs). Existing Top Level Domains include the well-known dotCOM, dotORG, dotBIZ and dotTV names, amongst others but there are expected to many bids submitted for new domains including dotNYC, dotLONDON, dotBERLIN, and dotCYMRU in a process that will expand greatly the number of domains or web addresses available to internet users. Local MP Angus Robertson said: “ If successful the dotSCOT campaign will open up opportunities for many companies and organisations who wish to be associated with a distinctive Scottish web address. There are obvious benefits to companies marketing exclusively Scottish produce - particularly in the food and drink sectors such as Scotch Whisky. “ Other organisations which could benefit might include Scottish charities, sporting and cultural organisations and others around the world such as International Burns Societies who have strong links to Scotland. “ Individuals and Organisations can declare their support for the campaign at www.dotscot.net/support-the-bid/” |
