The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has published a report into the structure and management of the MOD which fails to even mention Scotland once in its 87 pages. The report highlights the top heavy senior ranks in the Armed Forces, which are almost exclusively stationed in the south of England while no mention is made of the lack of key decision-making officers in Scotland. According to MOD statistics only 2.1% of senior military personnel (10 in total) are based in Scotland. Westminster SNP Leader and Defence spokesman Angus Robertson MP said: “The Ministry of Defence is content for Scotland to be home to a derisory number of senior officers. This reflects the priority Scotland has for the MOD and sadly this report will not improve the situation. “There are aspects to this report which should introduce welcome reforms, but Scotland is not a priority in this report and doesn’t even get a single mention in its 87 pages. “No Scottish Government would ever manage defence in Scotland so badly." Background Senior Military Personnel in Scotland Recent parliamentary answers from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) confirm how few senior military personnel are stationed in Scotland (2.1%), Wales (0.4%) and Northern Ireland (0.6%). Only 3 of the top 110 senior Royal Navy officers, 5 out of 230 senior Army Officers and 2 out of 130 senior Royal Air Force officers are based in Scotland. None of the 18 most senior Royal Marine officers are based in Scotland. http://www.publications. |
