MORAY PARLIAMENTARIANS ON RAF KINLOSS DISBANDMENTS PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 May 2011 00:00
File:ZJ517.jpgMoray’s SNP Parliamentarians Angus Robertson MP and Richard Lochhead MSP have expressed their sadness at the disbandment ceremonies in Forres to mark the public farewell of the three flying squadrons based at RAF Kinloss.

Servicemen and women from the three Kinloss-based former Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft squadrons marched through Forres to exercise the air station's right to the freedom of the town, two days before the units are disbanded following the defence review.

Moray MP Angus Robertson, who is the Westminster SNP Leader and Defence spokesman said:

“ This is a sad day for everyone associated with RAF Kinloss. These squadrons have served with great distinction and are being foolishly consigned to history by the UK government. Just at a time when maritime patrol capability is needed these three excellent world-beating squadrons are being disbanded. It is a terrible and reckless mistake.”

Moray MSP Richard Lochhhead said:

“ The whole of Moray is sad about what is happening to RAF Kinloss and its squadrons. Our thoughts go out to the servicemen and women from the base as well as their families. It is difficult to understand why we as a maritime nation now have no designated fixed-wing patrol capability. These disbandment’s mark a loss of experience, excellence and a capability which our neighbours like Norway and Ireland retain.”

The UK Coalition Government plans to introduce new legislation that would enable widespread surveillance of email, phone calls and social media such as Facebook. The SNP are opposed to security services having such wide-ranging powers. What do you think?
