SNP WELCOME NEWS OF CONTRACTS FOR MULTI-MILLION ROTHES PROJECT PDF Print E-mail

Helius Energy - Switching on the green light
Confirmation that contracts worth a whopping 44 million pounds have now been awarded for the construction of a new biomass energy plant at Rothes has been welcomed by Moray’s re-elected MSP Richard Lochhead.

Local MP Angus Robertson and local Councillors have also welcomed the news that the planned biomass energy plant for Rothes is on track to start construction in a matter of weeks. Construction of the plant will involve around 100 workers and the plant will provide around 20 full-time jobs when complete.

Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said:

“ The progress on this important renewable energy project is a shot in the arm for Moray and demonstrates clearly that Moray is in the forefront of renewable energy developments.

“ Not only do we produce fantastic high quality malt whisky in Moray but the waste produced in the process will soon be used to produce clean, green energy - enough to supply around 9,000 homes.

“ In our manifesto we promised that 100% of Scotland’s energy needs will be met from renewable sources by 2020 and the Rothes biomass project is a significant part of that effort.”

Moray’s MP Angus Robertson said:

“ This is an important and innovative energy project that ties in perfectly with one of Scotland’s best known products. It means cleaner energy and quality jobs in Speyside and I am absolutely delighted to see the progress on this project.

“ It is expected that construction will begin within 3 months and that construction phase will, in itself, be a good boost to the local economy.

“ Renewable energy will be the major growth industry in Scotland in the coming years and Moray as a whole is extremely well placed to make the most of that energy revolution.”

SNP Councillors for Speyside Glenlivet Ward, Pearl Paul and Mike McConachie have also welcomed the development.

Cllr Pearl Paul said:

“ This is a fantastic boost for Rothes with new jobs that will pay decent wages in a modern industry. Projects like this are very important to sustaining our local rural economies in Speyside and it has the backing of community who very much recognise those benefits.

“ The construction alone will bring a boost for accommodation providers and local shops and the long-term employment benefits are plain to see.”

Cllr Mike McConachie said:

“ This is a 50 million pound project that will see new jobs and innovation in Rothes and which will provide additional work for local contractors and suppliers for a long time to come.

“ We have a fantastic opportunity to combine production of our famous malt whisky brands with production of sustainable renewable energy. Speyside is well-placed to take full advantage of that.”
