ROBERTSON WELCOMES OFGEM ENERGY REFORMS PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 March 2011 00:00
Moray’s Westminster Member of Parliament, Angus Robertson, has welcomed an Ofgem review of the retail energy market which has concluded that competition is being stifled by complex tariffs, poor supplier behaviour and a lack of transparency.

SNP MPs have long demanded an investigation and reforms in the energy market and Mr Robertson has welcomed news Ofgem are finally taking action. The regulator began the review last year after finding that margins on a standard-dual fuel-tariff had increased 38% from September to November after price increases.

Commenting, local MP Mr Robertson said:

“ In every household in Moray people are affected by rocketing energy costs and it is ridiculous that prices continue to rise the way they are while the energy companies record massive profits. That situation is outrageous.

“ Ofgem has finally got to where many of us have been for years, and raised serious questions as to the way the energy market was working for consumers, with confusing tariffs and prices, and the totally inappropriate concentration on “switching” as the way to reduce prices to consumers.”

“ The way the big six energy companies hiked prices, claiming market conditions and wholesale costs were responsible, while recording huge profits, never added up.

“ Ofgem must now follow through with this report and ensure that action is taken to simplify the market. We must now have action to address the high tariffs charged for pre-payment meter customers as well as steps to help retail customers understand the market more easily.

" With fuel poverty amid energy plenty the energy market clearly is not working for the consumer and there is now an overwhelming case for strong reforms to keep the energy market in check.”
