DEFENCE REVIEW FAILING FIRST TEST PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 March 2011 00:00
SNP MP Angus Robertson today said the Strategic Defence Review has failed it's first test as leading military voices aired their concerns over the review in a letter to the Independent on Sunday.

The letter from former senior military officers across the forces states that the recent evacuation of civilians from Libya and talk of a no fly zone over Libya show the problems of decommissioning the Ark Royal and the Harrier fleet.

Mr Robertson, whose Moray constituency includes RAF Kinloss and RAF Lossiemouth which is currently under threat from the review said:

" This letter comes from strong and experience voices across the services and the defence community.

" The SDSR was constructed without a clear purpose other than to cut costs.  It is becoming increasingly clear that it is not up to scratch.

" Events in North Africa have begun to expose the weakened position of UK forces as a result of the review while communities in my constituency and others know the devastating impact decisions made by the SDSR are having on personnel.

" We must have the armed forces we need to meet our obligations.  Right now, the SDSR does not deliver that."
