Moray’s SNP MP Angus Robertson is calling on the Tory led UK Government to back SNP proposals for a Fuel Duty Regulator - a system designed to bring down road fuel taxation, and which both the Tories and Lib-Dems backed before the election. In a debate secured by the SNP at Westminster a strong case was made for introducing a tax regulating mechanism that would see fuel duty reduce as oil prices rise, meaning that the Treasury would not be taking in billions of pounds in extra taxation as oil prices increase. Commenting the SNP’s Angus Robertson said: “ The SNP are leading the debate on fuel duty with strong workable proposals for a Fuel Duty Regulator. “ The soaring price of fuel is a major issue for constituents. It is frequently raised on the doorsteps, in the street and in correspondence. It is clearly going to be a major issue in the coming Scottish Parliament election. “ The Tories and Lib-Dems both supported a Fuel Duty Regulator before the election and they now seem to be rapidly backtracking. That is not acceptable to the thousands of motorists in areas like Moray, whose vehicles are an essential method of transport and by no stretch of the imagination a luxury. “ The rapidly rising price of oil is compounded by the Treasury creaming off more and more tax, at the expense of hard-pressed Moray families and businesses. The increase in VAT has pushed petrol and diesel up by nearly 3p a litre, around £1.50 extra tax for a tankful. “ Increasing fuel costs put up the price of everything at a time when wage freezes are the norm and swingeing Westminster budget cuts are putting thousands of public jobs at risk. “ The Chancellor says one minute that he supports better controls of fuel prices but he refuses to take action. The SNP have proposed a clear workable policy and the UK Government needs to get behind that proposal.” |
