As Defence Minister Nick Harvey visits Moray SNP Elected Representatives in Moray have responded to news of a possible announcement delay on the future of RAF Lossiemouth. Moray MP and SNP Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson said: “ There will be shock and astonishment from people around RAF Lossiemouth over a possible announcement delay. A prolonged period of economic uncertainty is the last thing we need on top of the loss of the Nimrods from RAF Kinloss. “ The Tory-led UK Government ought to be ashamed of the way it is treating people in Moray’s communities. We need a decision that RAF Lossiemouth is safe as soon as possible and we need proper economic support to help the economy recover following the Kinloss decision. These are the 2 basic things that the Tories should be delivering but are manifestly failing to do.” Locla MSP Richard Lochhead said: “ The ongoing uncertainty and delay is causing significant disruption to the local economy already and it looks like David Cameron is happy to prolong that agony for people in Moray. “ It is playing with people’s livelihoods on a massive scale, causing worry and uncertainty for thousands of people. It is totally unacceptable.” Lossiemouth SNP Councillor David Stewart who has been heavily involved with the Save Lossie Campaign said: “ The UK Government has once again moved the goalposts for the thousands of families and businesses that support RAF Lossiemouth. “ First the decision was supposed to be by Christmas, then it was moved back to the Spring and now it might be the Summer. It is real people we are talking about here, many of whom are in limbo waiting for a decision. “ We continue to make the strongest possible case to Westminster and they need to respond to that now rather than play political football with RAF bases and the communities around them.” Forres SNP Councillor Irene Ogilvie said: “ We have seen financial commitment from the Scottish Government to support regeneration around Kinloss and Forres but not a thing from the Tories at Westminster, despite the fact that they are wholly responsible for defence decisions. “ Forres, Kinloss, Findhorn and the neighbouring communities are being left high and dry by the UK Government and the continuing uncertainty over Lossiemouth only serves to make that worse.” |
