Moray MP Angus Robertson has described the breaking of Nimrods for scrap as ‘gross vandalism’ by the Tory Government.
In a cruel twist to the saga it has also emerged that the MoD is giving nearly 200 million pounds in compensation to BAe Systems, who have been building the aircraft. Meanwhile local politicians, enterprise chiefs and campaigners are continuing to fight for money to support the local economy. Commenting local MP and SNP Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson said: “ This latest development is quite frankly unbelievable. While the Tory-led Government in Westminster is ignoring the economic plight of Kinloss and the surrounding area they think it’s fine to throw 200 million pounds at BAe Systems on top of the existing 4 billion pound spent on Nimrod. “ The scrapping of the new Nimrod aircraft is an act of gross vandalism by the Government. I cannot think of a single example of nearly £4 billion worth of taxpayer’s property being sawn to pieces and sent to the landfill. It’s an unimaginable waste. “ It is just incredible that the Tories are happy to chuck a further 200 million pounds at the scrapping of Nimrod but continue to ignore the damage being done to our local economy here in Moray. The MoD needs to examine its priorities and get behind the families and businesses of Forres and Kinloss that will bear the brunt of this decision for years to come. Forres SNP Councillor Irene Ogilvie said: “ I am just outraged at this development. It is crazy decision-making by the Government. What planet are they living on that makes them think it is reasonable to throw 200 million pounds away in compensation to a company that is receiving billions, while our local economy here in Forres is getting hammered. “ The fight for support following the decision on Kinloss will continue regardless and the Prime Minister and his Cabinet need to get a grip of the priorities.” |
