HIGH SPEED RAIL PLAN SHUNTS SCOTLAND INTO SIDINGS PDF Print E-mail

RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE IMPORTANT TO MORAY’S GROWTH

Moray SNP MP Angus Robertson has expressed his disappointment after a statement from the UK Government confirmed that the first phase of high speed rail will not include Scotland.

The SNP Scottish Government supported by the Westminster SNP Group has previously written to the UK Government over proposals for a high speed link from Edinburgh to London - a service which would bring considerable economic and environmental benefits.

The UK Government has so far failed to make the project a priority.

Commenting on the decision Angus Robertson MP said:

“ Transport links are particularly important to commerce in Moray and if the economy is to grow in the best possible way then the UK Government must pull its weight.

“ As it stands Scotland has been shunted into the sidings again by the Tory Government.

“ The travel chaos which has seen many domestic flights cancelled in recent days underlines the need for a high speed rail links between Scotland and the rest of the UK to provide alternative transport options that allow people to continue to carry out business and leisure activities.

“ For tourism in particular a modern rail network is vital to Moray and the UK Government retains significant responsibilities in that regard.

“ If the Tory Government really were committed to improving links whilst cutting emissions and supporting Scotland’s economy, they would be proceeding with a high speed line to Scotland.

“The decision to start in Birmingham shows exactly where the Tory Government’s priorities lie.”
